Brilliant Self-Refuting Argument

by rrusczyk, Sep 29, 2010, 10:03 PM

From this book:
Quote:
This review manual is generally proof-free. Proofs tend to waste space in most math books, and students skip the proofs anyway. I would care more that a student can apply a math concept than understand its derivation. If a theorem is well-known and in a mathematics book, then it must be true. Math is only useful if a person applies it. A series of known facts is useless.

It is, of course, well known, that 1=2. We can just apply the statement without worrying about its derivation.

Wow. We should burn this book, but of course we really shouldn't, as it is always bad to burn books.

That's a not-brilliant self-refuting statement.

yes what is this proof stuff and how can it be useful ever

To be fair, most of what students see in school is the crappy 2-column proof, which is a pretty useless waste of space :P

What if you don't know the proofs? How are you going to believe that?
