Video file size

by rrusczyk, Jun 27, 2008, 1:26 AM

Anyone out there know anything about streaming video over the internet? Specifically, I'm wondering what a reasonable file size (per minute) of video is. I have to really jack up the video quality to prevent the writing from becoming pixelated and ugly, but this dramatically boosts the size of the videos as a result. So, what file size should I be aiming for? 1 MB/min? 5 MB/min? 10 MB/min? 20 MB/min? 30 MB/min? Anyone know?

I always thought TED had really good quality for streaming video (much superior to youtube and google video). Judging from the filesizes for the downloads and the length of the videos, it looks like they're squeezing it all in under ~3MB/min.

Size varies a lot depending on compression algorithm, though. I think TED uses H.264, at least for the videos that get sent out as part of their podcast. H.264 is probably also a good bet for compatibility, too, as quicktime includes the algorithm, and lots of people have quicktime installed already through itunes bundling. Although, when compressing, you will want to make sure the settings are correct for streaming, since the algorithm will work slightly differently then. After that, my guess is that it should be easily embed-able in a standard html file.

Hmm the last thing you would want your viewers to go through is the pause-and-load portions of streaming videos. I was watching machinimas the other day and this kept on happening. Needless to say I didn't go back to it.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, I don't know a lot about online video streams. Also, is there another way besides hand-written things? If you animated or wrote stuff on the video using programs, that could drastically improve image quality.

I think it's important to have a person on-screen. I don't like videos that have a disembodied voice over a screen of writing. Also, doing everything with complete typesetting would multiply production time by 10, which would make the project more or less impossible to do.

Hao - I can't believe I've never heard of that site before. You just sucked hours out of my life (though I think they'll be hours well spent).
