Sound Leveling

by rrusczyk, Jul 10, 2009, 1:31 AM

Rant of the moment. I know there are pretty fancy tools that do this, but why in the world isn't it very simple and cheap to put a setting on radios or iTunes (if you know how to do this on iTunes, please tell me) that makes everything come out at something close to the same volume. I'm sitting here with it on shuffle, listening to some Debussy nice and calm. And then wham -- an opening harmonica riff from Kenny Neal and Billy Branch that nearly knocks me off my chair. Had the Debussy been louder, I wouldn't have been floored by that launching harmonica.

But it did at least knock me out of my stupor... Flipping through pages to check pagebreaks is a dreadfully dull last step of the printing. (Not the Precalc book, sigh. Just the next printing of Intro Geometry.)

In iTunes: select or right-click a song, go to "Get Info". Under "Options", there's a volume adjustment. I use it myself; most of my library is set in the center, with a few albums set louder.
I don't know of a way to do this for the iPod version.

On the Mac version of iTunes, at least, there is an option called Sound Check in Preferences > General > Playback.

What exactly does that do? I just tested it on a serious crescendo (the end of the third movement of Beethoven's 5th) and didn't like the effect; there was still a crescendo, but the whole thing was softer than my normal setting. That made the early parts essentially inaudible against light background noise.
It probably works well for some genres, but I'll stick with my songwise adjustments.

Hmmm...Is it possible to write extensions for Itunes? If not, I'll try to write something that does this just for fun...

Do you have to manually set each song/album?

"Sound Check" is a global setting. The volume slider I've been using has to be set for each track.
