Pricing books

by rrusczyk, Jun 17, 2006, 3:21 PM

As with our classes, I think we're off-market low with our books. Not by as much as the classes, but we started off low in 1993 and have gotten comparatively lower - our books have risen in price roughly 20% in nearly 12 years. Postage is up more than 50%. I don't need to mention how much everything else is up.

Pricing books for pre-college students is even trickier, because people simply are used to getting everything for 'free', as they overlook property taxes and other ways they pay for education. Moreover, they're used to paying, when they do pay themselves, for mass-market things like SAT prep books. They haven't yet been exposed to college books, which often run over 100 dollars, as noted by blahblahblah and ComplexZeta earlier. This factor is a smaller problem with the classes, as people are used to paying for outside education. Witness music lessons, which are tremendously more expensive than AoPS classes.

For our new books, we're still researching printing costs. These books will be 2-color rather than just black-and-white, so they'll cost a little more to print. We'll likely be offering significant discounts both for buying groups of different books (i.e. an 'Intro package' consisting of the 4 intro books plus AoPS Vol. 1 will be much cheaper than buying them 1 at a time), and for buying bulk of a single title. As the books will be designed for students to write in them, repeat bulk customers may enjoy an additional discount. We intend these books to form a math library for students - i.e. something they will want to keep.

What are the 4 intro books you are coming out with? Number theory, geometry... counting and algebra?

Yes, those are the four that are planned.

Something that might be interesting to look at would be the following link

Springer-Verlag Problem Books in Mathematics

Although I'm generally not a huge fan of Springer books, they're pretty reasonably priced as far as books from the major publishers go (certainly cheaper than anything from McGraw-Hill). In particular, I tend to think that the prices for Larson's and Engel's books, which are the only true problem solving books in that set, are fairly reasonably priced, although not exceptionally so, given that they are softcover.

I haven't yet seen a copy of the original AoPS, so what quality is the book? Are the pages and binding of comparable quality to those of the major publishers?

Yes - the print quality of the original AoPS is the same as, say, Engel (same paperweight, binding).

As far as publishers of technical books at reasonable prices go, I think AK Peters is terrific. The Winning Ways series by Berlekamp, Conway, and Guy is in full color, and each volume is under $$50. Springer's books are also good in my opinion (I have piles and piles of them in my room). McGraw Hill's prices are ludicrous though. It's good that professors tend to use books published by, say, Springer or Birkhuser.
