WOOT Planning

by rrusczyk, Jun 17, 2006, 3:21 PM

We're starting our detailed WOOT planning for 2006-07. We learned a lot from our first year. We'll be adding a couple dates of test-taking strategy, widening the difficulty range of the classes, adding problem sets and de-emphasizing tests (though we will have a couple mock AIMEs and mock USAMO days), and including some more brief articles for exploration.

As discussed on the message board, we are considering not offering the Olympiad classes anymore. One option I've been thinking about is to combine bits and pieces of the Olympiad classes into an Olympiad Problem Series. Basically, now that we have WOOT, the Olympiad classes saw significantly lower enrollment. Furthermore, we're spread pretty thin here at AoPS with all we do. By halting the Olympiad classes, we can focus more of our energy on WOOT and producing more community materials on the site. More on these soon as we build them :).

I suggest team contests for WOOT. I think that would be a great help for everyone.

How would you suggest structuring them?

I don't think it matters so much, but here is one possibility:

Same format as WOOT tests, but form teams of six which are given six problems of varying difficulty. Two or three days before the solutions are due (give them a week or something), randomly assign write-ups to people on the team. That way, people are forced to share their solutions and also have more pressure to write things up well.

The important thing is that this would promote discussion of WOOT problems, something which didn't happen so much this year.

Good point; there wasn't much discussion of the tests themselves. I think you're on to something here; we'll bat a few ideas around in the office.

Can you detail this a little bit 'producing more community materials on the site' please?

If team contests were to occur, I would suggest that teams would be assigned either randomly, or in such a way that teams are balanced based on previous tests. If we were allowed to choose teams ourselves, I think it would be very probable that IMO/MOP people would band together at the expense of everyone else, especially as MOP will have already happened and all the MOP people will know each other and probably doing WOOT because they get it for free. I note that Xantos C. Guin, Russian Ninja, and I did something like that at an informal tournament recently.
