Videos in Alcumus

by rrusczyk, Dec 18, 2008, 6:45 PM

Which is better for the videos in Alcumus:

1) Only allow access to videos for those subjects for which the student is deemed ready?

2) Allow access to all videos, with the videos grouped into "Ready", "Passed", "Not Ready".

Depends - what is your main goal of Alcumus? To let students have a free resource like the AoPSWiki or to use Alcumus as a free "online course?"

Why don't you link to a post on ML/AoPS and let users vote, do you prefer possibly good reasons over popularity?

I am in favour of option 2.

Just curious, what would be the rationale for limiting access to certain videos? Learning from a book, one has access to all of the chapters at once, but I've never given any thought to whether that is a good thing or a bad thing.

I think #2. It can't hurt to have the "not ready" videos accessible.

Option 1.

I like the idea of making the videos a reward for the work. It seems like people will value them more in that case.

Except that the purpose of the videos is to teach. So if you mastered the subject why would you need to watch the video(besides that it is entertaining or for a couple more math problems)? I say #2

I'd go with the second one, the one where we have all the videos available at first and they are categorized as ready, etc. Alcumus is great BTW! :) The McCain-Obama mistake :)

I agree with making "not ready" videos available. I have had to deal with FACTORIALS and GOOGLE STUFF to solve problems during PREALGEBRA 1!
