I'll never understand the urge of some people to know hundreds and thousands of digits of $\pi$ ... :?

It's no fun just memorizing digits of pi, but it is fun seeing how many you can memorize in a short period of time. One time I was waiting in line with a guy with digits of pi on the back of his shirt. I think I had around 20 or so additional digits by the time I was done waiting :). Now if only everyone I've waited behind had a shirt with digits of pi...

What kind of kid sits around memorizing 8000 digits of pi?!?!
He should spend his time doing something more useful, like problem solving. :D

Sadly, things like this catch people's attention more than someone writing a perfect paper on the USAMO.

This also doesn't discourage that common stereotype that those who are good at math are human calculators...oh how I hate that one :ninja:

I agree. I once saw a website for a Human Calculator World Cup. I must say, I never saw the fruitfulness of extracting the square root of a six-digit number in your head.

Ahhh, not another annoying stereotype. People too often associate memorizing with math. No, that's science and history, I tell them, but then there's things like this and they say, "See, $\pi$'s math!" If he has that kind of a memory, couldn't he use it for more useful things?
