Utah MathCounts

by rrusczyk, Mar 26, 2007, 10:11 PM

I blogged earlier about about a program using Art of Problem Solving books at West High School. The program was initiated by parents of students at the school, and I'm happy to report that I'll be seeing not 1, not 2, not 3, but all 4 MathCounts team members at Nationals. They took the top four slots individually (and probably a few more: the school sent all 8 chapter participants to state).

How come a High school is participating in Mathcounts? Maybe Utah will be first at nationals. :)

hey sonny, the thing is, there is the extended learning program (ELP) at west high which allows 7th and 8th graders to go there. they added extra teachers for the middle school classes but the middle schoolers can also take high school classes of their choice. In fact, all four of those guys that destroyed the state competition take the AoPS class. How do I know all this you might ask, have i been spying? No, Im one of them!!!!!! :rotfl:
but dont worry, we wont get first team at nationals. :rotfl:

The AoPs class is a class run by parents of the students. We foloow the AoPS Volume 1 book, chapter by chapter. I believe that this is the only class of its kind in the United States. It will continue onto next year using the second volume. I believe from what I have heard, that Ruszycky(Sorry on spelling) and David Patrick are both going to be coming 4 times to West High to lead the class. SO if you're in Utah, interested in math, come to West High. We did sweep state with these standings:
Individual:
1st: hihihihihihihi
2nd: Delian
3rd: Paragonmasterkkk
4th: grizzlybear

Countdown:
1st: hihihihihihihi
2nd: grizzlybear
3rd: Delian
4th: Paragonmasterkkk
We were also first place team, so our coach gets to go with us also.
