Stanford Math Circle

by rrusczyk, Sep 11, 2006, 6:25 PM

Sam asked me to spread the word about his Stanford Math Circle, which is one of our foundation's local programs. I highly recommend students in the Bay Area go and check it out (especially when Sam himself is teaching - we're very happy to have him coming to San Diego to teach at our Math Circle on Nov 4).

Yeah, if there are ways for Stanford undergrads to help out with this, I would as well. I know this started up last year, but I never really heard anything about it then. Is SUMO (the Stanford math club) involved at all?

Question: would the Stanford Math Club have any interest in replicating the effort of the students at Yale to bring MATHCOUNTS to some of the less wealthy areas of the Bay? Here's the Yale group's effort:
http://www.yale.edu/mathcounts/index.html. I think the Princeton Math Club may be working on something similar, and we hope to get something like it started here in San Diego.

That seems like a good idea. I'll bring it up with the president and whoever else is an officer this year. The main obstacle would probably be our lack of a big organization. But we shall see.

jamie & sly - thanks much! Let me know what y'all come up with. Mainly, you'll need a few highly motivated people to make it work.

The current session of High school math circle is being taught by an international student. His teaching skills are Bad ( I know it is a strong word), he seems to explain in a very monotonous and boring way, spending most of his energy in trying to sound like an American, rolling ‘r’ and such. Totally killing the spirit of math circle. Bunch of us math enthusiasts are all extremely disappointed this year. I hope Stanford brings someone with energy, enthusiasm and experience in teaching to teach this class not some undergrad who is willing to teach for some extra money and resume building, at the expense of out kids.
