Parents taking matters into their own hands

When I speak to groups of parents, I often try to give a strong pitch to the parents to go out and do something themselves. I know it's hard for most people to find the time, but if parents really want something better for their children, their best bet sometimes is to build it themselves. I've seen some remarkable examples of this in the last few years, such as the work of the parents in the SDMC, the Valley Math Circle and LA Math Circles, Ravi B's work in NY, and much more. Here's an article about a class built by an AoPS parent in Utah, using AoPS books for class structure. This is a good example of parents working within the system to build something good for their children.

I could not agree more with you!! If you want something, find someone to do it for you, find someone to help you do it or start doing it yourself. So many times people want something but they are not willing to work at it to get it done. (Just like some kids in Mathcounts). The ones with the work ethic tend to rise to the top. People can do the same thing if they just start small and improve it every time they have a chance!!

I fully agree. Parents do not have to be knowledgeable in a subject to get involved. My success is the result of parents helping in several ways. They check their email daily, print off material and problems for their kids, and make sure that their kids do work assigned as if it were regular homework.

With the Internet, there are many resources available for free or for peanuts. It bothers me that parents think of popcorn scholarships and sports scholarships more than scholarships through academic credit. May be parents would get more involved if our universities publicised academic scholarships. In our little town, we heard that HYSMP courted our golf champion and Stanford won him over by being there at his door. (does that happen?).
