I used the more efficient strategy of just directly jumping to level 25. That one took me a few minutes, but you get the hang of it after a while. Then I got bored.

has been around for a while now (at least as early as 2005). However, I don't believe John uses the proper algorithm to generate truly random planar graphs. Some heuristics work really well on John's version that work slightly less well on the version that you linked to. (If you play around on planarity.net, I think you'll find that there are never any vertices with degree > 4)
