What Calculators Hath Wrought

by rrusczyk, Jun 17, 2006, 3:21 PM

At the end of the NCTM Convention, I learned the following from two young middle school teachers:

1990 + 1990 = 2980

1990 x 2 = 2980

I think this is a direct result of giving students calculators before they learn to understand numbers.

Sigh. I won't win this battle, of course. TI and Casio have way, way, way more money than I do. I felt like I was at a calculator convention sometimes.

There were some good ones there, too. But woefully more were interested in getting as many free pens as possible then sprinting to Disneyland.

I also took quite a while to catch the mistake. I was extremely confused at what the point of that was for several minutes.
