AMC

I met with the AMC Board meeting over the weekend. I continue to be impressed by the people involved. An overriding question in many discussions is 'Is this good for mathematics?' In fact, this question usually trumps 'Is this good for the AMC?' This I find very admirable. In the next few posts I'll bring up some of the items we discussed, as I'd like to hear from people on a variety of issues. Unfortunately, I can't yet talk about the issue many of you are likely to care about most right now - USAMO selection. (Please don't ask or even speculate; I can't answer yet.)

One thing I would like to suggest to those of you AMC appreciators is to write (not just email) the national office and express your thanks to the staff. For the AIME and the USAMO the staff put in an astounding number of hours above and beyond their normal day to turn around the results quickly. It's not uncommon for them to work until midnight, and they'll probably have to work even later than midnight on the USAMO this year, as they have to have organized all the incoming papers for grading by the day after the USAMO ends. That address is:

American Mathematics Competitions
University of Nebraska, Lincoln
1740 Vine Street
Lincoln, NE 68588-0658

um.. this is slightly off topic, but I'm a freshman who made USAMO this year and I'm wondering what would be the best way to prepare for it given the time remaining.

Do an old USAMO. If you can't solve at least 3 problems, you're pretty much screwed.
