Revolutionary Thought

Let teachers figure out what's best for their students. While I may not agree with all the decisions the teachers make in building their curriculum, or with the idea that "do it all online and pitch textbooks," I have to love the idea of the school district letting the teachers put this together. Very empowering to the teachers, I would expect. (Thanks for pointing this out, Val.)

But while Westport’s new approach has attracted interest in the math education world, the vast majority of schools in Connecticut and elsewhere continue to race through dozens of math topics in each grade because of concerns that cutting back could hurt student performance on state assessments and SATs.

I guess this is another example of standardized tests overall hurting student performance...

I spend a lot of time tutoring elementary school students, and I have to say it's astonishing the amount of time they waste preparing for the CMTs.

If teachers have the ability to determine what is best for their students, then what role exactly do standardized tests play? After all, standardized tests are supposed to help teachers gauge how well their students are doing. But since teachers work with their students on a day-to-day basis, how many standardized tests do they really need?

Is it better to let teachers decide when to give standardized tests and when to use their own judgement to determine in what class a student should be placed and how a student is doing?

Is it best to use standardized tests mainly for the purpose of credentials for applying to a good college?

I'm a student, so I probably only have a one-sided view on this issue... :maybe:
