USAMO increase sponsored by Art of Problem Solving

We recently suggested the AMC increase participation in the USAMO, and offered to help fund such an increase. Today, they accepted our suggestion, so the 2006 USAMO will have roughly 375 participants. Our hope in doing this is that those students who feel they are near the borderline on the AIME will spend more time focusing on Olympiad-style mathematics, as they will be more confident they will pass the AIME. We also hope that this will put more students near that borderline and encourage them to work on challenging problem-solving style mathematics. Furthermore, there will be more students who are the first in their schools who qualify for the USAMO, and in some of these cases, this will inspire others at those schools to get involved.
