What I Do For a Living

by rrusczyk, Jun 18, 2007, 6:29 PM

People sometimes ask what I do at my job for AoPS, as in 'What do you do each day?'

Today, I've been at work for about 3.5 hours.

I have written 45 emails.

Sometimes that's what I feel like I do: I write emails.

"Hey what do you do for a living?"

"I make marks on a piece of paper with a graphite composite."

or

"Hey what do you do for a living?"

"I write novels about wizards and witches that have inspired a generation of kids to want to read."

Seemingly tedious tasks serve a purpose...I should get to college apps sometime. :P

haha. Good one Richard! I think entrepreneurs spend a great deal of time on emails in general. I've sent 1736 emails so far this year, though clearly I'm still trailing you quite a bit!

I've been using a new approach recently though. Instead of checking email every 5 minutes, I now only check emails every 1.5 hours. This allows me to have uninterrupted stretches of time to do "real work", and not let email overrun my schedule.

I'm at 24,200 non-automated emails from the office in the last 3 years. That doesn't count the ones I send from home or on the road.

As for who I send them to - pretty much all sorts. Customers, coworkers, other people in the industry, etc. . .

Well I'm at roughly 6,000 sent emails in the past 3 years. That's 5.5 emails a day

I wrote 60 e-mails for my math team (as a PR) last year and I was afraid that nobody cares about e-mails anymore to be sending so much out... and I was as well speaking to myself. Reading about your own load of e-mails surprised me. :D
