More me in the movies

by rrusczyk, Jul 4, 2006, 12:39 AM

We're experimenting with making little video clips to discuss math problems and ideas.

Here's one:

I'm looking for feedback before I make a bunch of these.

So far, things we already know:

1) I need to write bigger.
2) We need to make the little tag box at the bottom legible.

What else?

That was great except my computer doesn't have speakers plugged in. :(

The explaination of why adding 1 to both sides is usefull was probably good, based on what you wrote on the board. This will help student's who don't already know why to do that.

It would be good to generalize for $xy+ax+by=c$. where a and b aren't equal to 1.

Also, if you have a larger whiteboard, use that.

Goo job. I reccomend that you don't repeat yourself in materials. If your books cover one thing, don't make a video for it. I also reccomend you don't make these something one would need for pay for. You need to make sure the video player runs on all browsers, and that could make a really messy technical mess.

You should also explain your method more. You motivations, etc. It seemed very... robotic and contrived, even to me.

In my opinion, these would be great for small essays, just like Math Olympiad Treasures and MM.

This was just part 1 ;)

We'll be breaking lessons into pieces, as 15 minute clips don't yet work so well on the web.

We're limited on whiteboard/screen space, unfortunately.

As for subject coverage, we'll likely just jump all over the place with these. There will necessarily be overlap with the books, as ultimately we'll include almost everything we think important in the books.

We might do things like put up solutions to AIME problems or National MATHCOUNTS problems, etc. At this point, I think the medium is better for simpler problems than complex ones, primarily due to board space and time issues.

The video player, as I understand, is Flash (though we've tried a bunch, I can't remember right now which we have temporarily settled on).

As for pay-to-watch, that's not the plan right now. If we ever make it into something that's pay-to-watch, we would likely still have a considerable free library. However, at this point, we wouldn't want to put those kinds of resources into this project, which is really just a fun side thing at this point.

What's wrong with repeating yourself? Consider generating functions, for example. Some people can understand them just by reading the books. Others might need to ask questions on the message boards. Even others might not have it click until they see someone explain it. They have so many books and classes it will be inevitable for there to be overlap.

What can he do to explain more? I thought the way he explained it was excellent...I couldn't do any better.

Well, I mean, if you are selling a book, don't reproduce that book in video. Do different things, or at least different problems and explainations.

Hrm, you forgot to mention that (142,0) doesn't work because it asked for positive integers...

Other than that, it was pretty good...the ending made me laugh. :P

I think that the videos are incredibly informative. It is much easier to learn topics when you see them explained than to just read about them, so I think covering material covered in the books is fine. Also, at least on the laptop I am using, the definition wasn't as good as it could have been (it looked much better being viewed on a regular computer). I hope you will create many more.

Would it be possible to add a version with subtitles because I know that some people don't have speakers, or might be viewing it at a place where it would not be appropriate to have lots of sound?

Great job!!

You look a little tense. Relax, it will come through in the video, and make you look like a star. :D
