Tick, tick, tick

Boom.

This is what you AoPSers may find yourselves working for in 15 years. Or maybe 10. Or maybe 5. Hopefully someone in government will have the guts to stand up to these policies and fight the huge battle that will have to be fought to curtail them. Otherwise, well, we'll all be working for GM, and we'll all live in Detroit.

This is the inevitable result of increasing time preference which results from representative government (as described by Hoppe in "Democracy, the God that Failed") Elected officials have a strong incentive to enjoy expanding city payrolls in the short term while pushing the costs on to future administrations and legislatures in the form of pension obligations.

Such a system is doomed to collapse because no politician has an incentive to address it (witness federal entitlements). The trick is to avoid the results as an individual. In any contract negotiation, AOPSers should place a much stronger preference on immediate cash which they can save themselves over future obligations that can be absolved through bankruptcy.

As tax payers, Americans and especially Californians need to break from the idea of living in net immigration locations. We are already seeing families and entrepreneurs escaping coastal states for lower cost and lower tax locations. Before all of these local, state and federal obligations are finally written off, it may be necessary for the most talented and creative among us to find a better place to live and work.

Yeah, this thought has crossed my mind more than once. I'd hate to leave where I live now, since I like my home and immediate surroundings so much. But it's not hard to imagine facing 65-70% marginal taxes in a few years. However, the nation's fiscal outlook is so dire that it's not clear I could get it much lower than 60% moving anywhere unless a fiscal miracle happens.

That's a little too close to the ocean for my tastes!
